Greg Newton
Greg, a long time cooper passed away suddenly on April 28th. He lived here from the early 70's through the early 90's. During this period he left twice for short periods. Once in the early 80's to visit Al Hapenemey (my spelling) in Thunder Bay - didn't stay long, too cold, too morose a place (the fin-ish influence) and then in 1985 to be chief cook at the Bralorne Hotel in the interior.
Greg was known for his quiet gentle ways and endless patience. He cooked every Sunday a big meal including his trademark pies. Every Friday night he picked up a case of beer and a bucket of KFC unless he was off camping. In 81 he, Ty, and myself went boating Media:Example.oggin Barclay sound on the West coast of Vancouver Island. An impromptu trip with me in my new and as yet untested kayak, he and Ty in a canoe with all the camping gear and supplies. Greg brought beer and none of us brought water. We discovered shortly that water was the valuable commodity and we had to buy some from fisherman!
Greg always was the chief cook, never a bottle washer, on our Coop camp trips. He was also the chief pig roaster for our summer barbecuesMedia:Example.ogg. He was consistently the voice of reason - when he chose to speak - at our often raucous house meetings. In the 90's Greg took up cycling, bought a sailboat and spent his weekends always off somewhere. He seemed to enjoy quiet solitude. He's someone to be sorely missed by those of us who knew him well.
Bon voyage Greg!
